North of the Arctic Circle on Greenland’s West Coast lies The Disko Bay, stretching from Upernavik in the North, to Kangatsiaq in the South, a distance of more than 550 Km. This region could be described as Colossus Iceberg country, as it produces some of the largest icebergs in the World, some weighing up to seven million tons, they spill into the ice-choked environment to wander around the Arctic for years. The climate is normally stable the sea clear and the sky either deep blue or murky grey. In high summer the Midnight Sun shines 24 hours a day. The region is steeped in history, dating back some 4000 years. South of the Disko Bay, still North of the Arctic Circle, lies Kangerlussuaq is situated near the end of a 160 Km fjord of the same name, is Greenland’s main International Airport. The scenery here is varied, with lush green valleys and desolate barren areas rich in wildlife, such as the arctic fox, reindeer and musk oxen.
Ilulissat the best known town in Greenland is beautifully situated beside one of the most productive glaciers in the World, at the mouth of a 40 Km ice-fjord filled with gigantic icebergs as tall as skyscrapers with only one tenth of their volume visible above the water. The modern 4 Star Hotel Arctic offers all facilities, situated on the outskirts of the town with outstanding views of the icebergs in the bay.
Uummannaq is one of Greenland’s northernmost municipalities lies almost at the Top of the World, some 590 Km north of the Polar Circle where the Midnight Sun extends from May to July. This colourful town, dominated by a heart shaped mountain of the same name, is beautifully situated on an island in Uummannaq fjord, surrounded by mountains and breathtaking deep blue ice-filled fjords, where from mid July whales can be seen almost daily. Nearby lies the settlement of Qilakitsoq, where in 1972 the famous well-preserved Greenlandic mummies were found.
